December 7, 2006Hi guys, I’m STEEL and I drive a 1972 Datsun 620 pickup. This truck has seen some much better days, and needs severe help.
My parents bought this truck for me as my first vehicle, and honestly, I was exited to have a car, but I still wish they had spent there money on something else. Every time I make any kind of comment like that though, my mother literally looks ready to cry.
I really cant sell it, so I think I would like to get it set up for drag racing.
My vision for the truck is this:
• No chrome.
• Black with red contrasting pieces (wheels, door handles, bumpers)
• Three piece bed cover
• Front disk with rear drums
• Chevy 305 with a T5
• POSI rear end
• Two bucket seats instead of the bench
• Some retractable seat belts would be nice as well (these are just bolted in and like to fall into the door when you get out)
Now, that is a long way off, at least a years worth of time and money. Most definitely not going to try and attempt all at once.
The truck is currently:
• Rusty chrome everywhere
• The base color was yellow, painted over with red (they did the red well, you cant tell it was yellow till your upside down working under the dash or you pop the hood) and then the most recent owner just spray bombed primer gray over the rust, dents, ect. The primer is peeling off, I swear there are spots of mud under it in some places.
• It has rust holes up to approximately a three inch diameter
• A cloth cover that has a few small holes in it that snaps on (inconvenient for dirt biking)
• It still has the stock engine, with a quarter million miles on it. It also has a worn out manual four speed.
• Open differential, and a horribly uncomfortable bench seat.
So, I’m not in a great financial situation. I am 16, I am in an accelerated youth program called “Running start”, allowing me to be a full time college student while also earning high school credits for my college classes. If all goes well, I will have my AA in June of 2008 and won’t have had to pay more than about $500 total to the school. I have to pay for gas, and I refuse to let my parents buy me anything any more. I’m working my butt off to act like an adult, but getting laughed at as I drive down the road is discouraging.
Over the Christmas break I plan on doing the body work and painting. I have never done any body work, and don’t even know where to start. I’m also thinking about removing the bed cover until I can afford to put a three piece on that is easier to take off and put back on.
I plan on rolling on a rustoleum paint job Here )
I have also been considering putting a S10 rear end on the truck, due to the higher availability of parts, but I have never done any of this before. Most of my mechanical knowledge comes from Dirt bikes, and they don’t have differentials….
Since this picture was taken the front spoiler has taken some heavy damage, one of the rear wheels had to be replaced with a miss-match, and the paint began to peal off.
