December 23, 2005I am looking for the best shock to use i have looked at some like toxic drop shock. I have a 1990 nissan pickup droped 6 inches front to back some of my friends said to just buy some regular skocks they would work fine but i think they will not last very long as if i went with a lowering shock if any suggestions it would help thanks.

December 24, 2005most of your "drop" shocks don't last very long.. at least mine didn't. The Hardbody shocks have a throw of about 6 inches on them.. so factory shocks will work just fine. I prefer the Monrooe Sensatrac shocks from Discount.. they are a little more expencive than the regular ones.. but ride really nice on a static dropped truck. I would personally stay w/ factory size shocks.. ONLY because you have a hardbody.. any other vehicle i would point you in a different direction.
PS- if you get the measurement for how long you need the shock to be.. the guys at discount can look up that size and give you your options.. but its going to be like a ford escort shock.. but the hardbody ones should be fine.

May 10, 2006WHOA! wait a minute! how come you can still use factory shocks on a dropped nissan hardbody? i have a 90 hb that im going to drop and i have never heard of using the factory shocks after the drop. because the truck is dropped, especially 6", it has less ground clearance so wouldnt you need a stiffer shock so that you dont bottom out every single time you hit a bump in the road? and dont the drop shocks help with ride quality when the truck is lowered?

The more a vehicle is dropped, the more 'important' it is to replace the shocks on it to shorter ones.
If the vehicle is only being lowered 2-3 inches, sure, the oe shocks can be used.
When the vehicle is being lowered 4, 5, 6 + inches, it is a MUST to go with shorter shocks.
If not, the oe shock WILL be compressed so much, that over (short) time, the seals in the shocks will blow out, and the shocks will be ruined.
10 years of experience in doing this stuff tells me I'm right too.
Ps My last truck was a 96 HardBody too.
May 11, 2006Yes my shocks are bottomed out and you are right on needing lowering shocks which I have not yet got still do to not having any money even with the stocks on it it is a pretty smooth ride the only time I bottom out is when I hit one hell of a bump. I did blow out one of the front shocks about six months ago and had to replace it. But I am going to take the shock mounts off the front of a mazda and fab them to the front of my nissan and relocate the the rear mounts and that will give me 4 inchs more shock with the stock one's on the six inch drop. With a stock shock fully collapsed it is 11 3/4 inchs with a drop shock fully collapsed it is 8 3/4 inchs which give's you 3 inchs more which yes will give you a better ride but at the price of $140 to $160 for the shocks and with a little fab work and some front shock mounts off a mazda for about $10 and 4 inchs of drop and then if you happened to get the drop shocks you would have 7 inchs of shock sounds much better. P.S. DO the math and save some money.

May 11, 2006Well I will always post on a reply as long as I know about it and it would be hard to rip the oil pan. I would have to do a good bit of dragging to get threw my front crossmember and the exaust is custom and tucked so I don't have to worry about it only dragging the frame and I don't worry about it either.

Relocating shock mounts is the way to go!
Since I used to have a HB like yours, I still have the rear shocks laying around. There is more travel in them than the ones on my Max.
When I drop it, I intended on relocating my mounts and using my HB shocks to give it more travel just like you talked about. It's a great solution to a problem that plagues us all. haha
Even better yet, I plan on upgrading to an air-shock to 'dial in' the rear suspension after it's strait dropped. Less damage to my kidneys that way. lol
May 11, 2006I heard that bro I just got me a mazda the other day for $100 bucks great little truck clean body and run's great it is my next project but I was looking at how the shock mounts were on it and thought that they would be perfect for what I was wanting to do and save some money as well I am willing to go to any extreme to customize my ride and be as low as possiable at the same time. But what you were talking about I have thought about the same thing myself on the air shock's if your ride is bagged why not run air skock's instead of just plain one's that way if a bag blow's out you can still ride and not be stuck on the side of the road changing out the bag right then you can ride to where it is convenent for you to change it out. It also would help out on jacking it up as well because when it is on the ground it is a*******to try and get a jack under it you know what I am talking about but anyways nice talking to you and glad to see that someone understands what I am talking about.
May 12, 2006Yup, we're definitely on the same page! Congrats on the Mazda to bro. That's killer! What model? My friends is a B2000 and yeah, looking at the 'front' leaf mounts, he has even been talking about mounting his 4 link bars to em'. Most likely relocated though.
They just look great for that. haha
Anyways, yeah, running air shocks is a great idea, and people always seem to overlook the setup. It definitely has it's pirks.
Like I said though . . I've talked to a few guys that have done it and they say, the lower you want to go (real low in your case) the smaller the shocks you'll need to use. UNLESS it's you and I here. haha
Any mount can be relocated then we can run the 'big boys', and have extra suspension to play with. Hell yeah with running em' with bags.
Great idea there. And even better with using em' as a pre-jack to get the body off the ground. haha Never thought of that one.
I probably already said it on here somewhere, but I'm planning on running em' up front too.
Cutting drop coils to achieve 4-5 inches of front drop, solid mounting the coils to the bottom pirch, so they don't move, then running an air shock through em'. That way, all the way down, there's suspension travel. *very little haha* and all the way up, the spring won't fall over when it is 'hyper extended'. Yeah buddy . . . the gears are always turning! haha
